THE JOHN AND MARY R. MARKLE FOUNDATION RECORDS, 1927-(1969-1994)

Record Group 2.2: Markle Foundation Administration

Series 1: President Lloyd N. Morrisett's Papers, 1927-(1965-1992), 19.5 cu. ft., boxes 1-20, Closed until January 1, 2008.

Lloyd N. Morrisett, who joined the Markle Foundation as president in 1969, initiated the foundation's program in communication and information technology following the termination of the Markle Scholar Program in academic medicine. Prior to accepting his position at Markle, Morrisett was vice president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. During his tenure with the Carnegie Corporation, he had been involved with public television projects and brought this interest and expertise to his new position. These papers document Morrisett's continuing interest, as president of the Markle Foundation, in public television and in the use of mass communication technology in education, science and the political process.

Except where noted, Markle Foundation folder titles and system of arrangement within folders have been maintained. President Morrisett's papers are arranged in five subseries:
  1. Alphabetical
  2. Subject
  3. Professional Activities
  4. Chronological
  5. Personal
Alphabetical (1927-(1965-1987) and Subject (1970-1992) Subseries (boxes 1-14)

Together, these subseries reflect Morrisett's service as an advisor or trustee on boards of corporations, foundations and institutions of higher learning. Among the most notable are Children's Television Workshop, Oberlin College, RAND Corporation, Systems Development Corporation, Media Commentary Council, Haskins Laboratories, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Morrisett's role in the founding of the Children's Television Workshop (CTW), which produced Sesame Street, Electric Company and other educational television programs, as well as his active participation in committees such as finance, investment, and nomination are documented. Chairman of CTW's Board of Directors since 1970, Morrisett's correspondence with Joan Ganz Cooney, Gerald Lesser, and David Brit, among others, delineates his active role in the direction and growth of the Workshop.

As an alumnus of Oberlin College, Morrisett served as a trustee for many years and was chairman of the board of trustees from 1975-1981. In 1973 and then again in 1982, he participated in presidential search committees; his papers from the 1973 presidential search reflect an active and vocal student involvement with the process. In addition to this work on nominations, his service as trustee included work in the areas of finance and investment, admissions, and long range planning.

Mr. Morrisett joined the board of the Systems Development Corporation in 1966 and was active during the time of the corporation's change in status from non-profit to profit. He became a board member as well of the Systems Development Foundation, which was created to carry on philanthropic efforts previously undertaken by the Systems Development Corporation. He remained a member of this board until the foundation's dissolution in 1988.

Mr. Morrisett was a member, as well, of the Media Commentary Council beginning with its incorporation, and was involved with the publication of Channels magazine from its inception until the magazine's sale in 1985.

The bulk of the alphabetical subseries spans the years 1965-1987. The earlier material in this subseries, dated 1927 through 1957 (folder 101), includes articles pertaining to the field of philanthropy and are of a reference nature only. The subject subseries, which spans the years 1970-1992, includes correspondence, memoranda, records of interviews, minutes of meetings, financial data of organizations and projects, grant proposals, studies, administrative miscellany, photographs, publicity materials, and printed materials. Throughout the materials are reflections and ideas pertaining to mass communication, education, and the growth of technology. Original order has been preserved and most of the material is filed in reverse chronological order.

Professional Activities Subseries 1960-1994 (boxes 14-19)

This subseries reflects Morrisett's attendance at workshops, institutes, and seminars as well as his participation in numerous organizations. Included are speeches, writings and testimony on a wide area of topics including higher education, communication and public policy, public broadcasting, educational television, cable television, foundations, and major trends and issues affecting America. Arrangement is in reverse chronological order and additional materials include correspondence, memoranda and attachments, minutes, financial data, and printed materials.

Chronological File 1977-1991 (boxes 19-20)

The subseries includes copies of correspondence and memoranda related to the management and activities of the Markle Foundation, personnel matters, and outside interests. Arrangement is in reverse chronological order.

Personal Files 1960-1969 (box 20)

This subseries primarily contains correspondence and materials related to activities prior to Morrisett's position at the Markle Foundation. It also includes congratulatory letters on his new position as president of the Markle Foundation.

Series 2: General Office Files, 1968-1992, 12.5 cu. ft., boxes 1-13, Files are closed that contain any material less than 15 years old. The general office files are arranged in two subseries: an alphabetical subseries by individual, organization, or topic and a chronological subseries. The alphabetical files contain memoranda, correspondence, project proposals, records of interviews, reports, printed material, and news releases. The files contain routine, as well as unique materials, particularly as they reflect the broad range of interests, activities and ideas evolving in the field of mass communication and information technology. The chronological file arranged by month and thereunder by reverse chronology by day, consists of office copies related to all outgoing correspondence generated by the foundation staff.
